it all falls down
June 23rd, 2023:
It all felt like it happened over night, so fast that I don't think anyone could give you a real clear answer as to what happened. There was so many conspiracy theories - it feels like everyone has their own idea these days. Some thought it was genetic testing, an attempt by the military to produce some kind of superhuman. Others thought it was some kind of biological warfare. There was even talk that it was God, smiting humanity for it's sins. The most popular theory was a virus, a mutation that had found the secrets to humanity's downfall. Virus FSD-1 was what they called it, whatever that means. Whatever it was, it changed the world forever. There's only one way i can possibly describe what happened three years ago - zombies. I know, sounds pretty cliche, right? But that's honestly what it felt like.
Let's start from the beginning.
It was sometime in the spring of 2020, I can't exactly remember when. There was a knock on the door, military personnel, practically ushering me out the door. They told Dad that were was an evacuation and everyone was expected to go to the quarantine zone. We weren't the only ones, everyone was being rushed out into the street, unable to grab and goods or belongings, and whisked away into the night.
The quarantine zone turned out to be a sectioned off area at the edge of town, some great big parking lot closed off with ten foot wired fences, topped with barb wire. Everyone was separated into massive groups, yet no matter the questions we asked, there were no answers. We were slowly herded through a process, like cattle being ushered into a pen. They took our blood, for whatever reason I'm not sure.
That's when the sirens went off. Storm sirens, emergency vehicles, all blaring out in chaotic unison. Everything fell apart. There was an uproar somewhere at the edge of the compound, one of the fences came crashing down. Gunfire followed. Panic. People turned on one another, family members separated.
Eventually the sirens stopped, and with it the the electricity. It was societal collapse right then and there. At first we thought it was just desperation driving people into madness, but after a while we started to notice that things were right. People were attaching each other, becoming irritated, vicious, driven by blood lust. Biting, scratching, tearing, teeth and nails were their weapons of choice. There was something about making these people mad, making them inhuman. I guess this is where the whole zombie thing came in.
The government never did regain control. The police and military alike were overrun. A new breed of human was on the rise - something that was hardly human at all. Fatality rates skyrocketed exponentially, but it wasn't just the zombies you had to fear. The chaos brought out the worst in humanity - revolts, rape, murder, anarchy. Anybody that survived the monsters were quickly taken out by their own kind. A new form of government rose to power, if you could call it that. People were forced to form alliances, fighting for survival, territory, resources. Gangs have emerged as the new power, all vying for dominance over what little remains. You learn after a while to stay out of the way, to stay quiet. Trust only those you must, don't be stupid, and don't make mistakes.
Do whatever it takes to survive.
